Daybreakers and a Breakthrough

Eureka, a breakthrough. I’m not sure if it was from going to see Daybreakers yesterday, or just all the collective time I’ve spent immersed in thinking, reading, and writing about vampires, but I finally got a direction I’d been searching for. It’s a fairly critical plot point, I’ve been dancing around this incident almost all the way through the now 291 pages worth, and never could hit on what this thing needed to be. As I was sitting in the theater watching the movie, something else came to me, but of course wasn’t able to write it down and now it’s gone. Maybe if I keep thinking about it I’ll remember. Or maybe I should go see the movie again, and keep pen and paper in my lap.

Daybreakers was an interesting alternate future, albeit extremely gory and bloody which interestingly hardly bothered me at all. Normally it’s not my thing, I must be in a really dark place these days because I didn’t have any issues with it. If you go to see it, pay attention to all the little newsbites that flash on during the opening credits, they set up the story.

I have to say there were some plot holes that were pretty glaring, and yes I know I need to suspend disbelief at the movies especially when it’s a vampire movie but some of it felt like a comic book that had been filmed, there was so much illogic. The futuristic fashions of the vampires had a decidedly retro feel, putting me in mind of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, but I will say there were scenes where the tension was high and I could feel the fear. Sam Neill was pretty chilling as the vampire CEO. I’ve loved him in everything I’ve seen him in since “Reilly: Ace of Spies.” I also thought Ethan Hawked turned in a fine performance. Willem Dafoe was as quirky and weird as ever, and had undoubtedly the best lines in the film. The film is short, about 90 minutes, which means Willem didn’t get nearly enough time on-screen for my tastes (and maybe they could have patched some of the plot holes with another thirty minutes). Then again, there are no super-human heroics with the good guys triumphing over evil in some ridiculous way. It’s pretty gritty and dark (and not just because most of it takes place at night) with some moments of realistic portrayal of how things might actually shake out if such a world were to come to pass (think Children of Men): Mob mentality, riots, general ugly behavior.

Much as I love me some vampires, I would hope never to see that world.

Author:

Writer of vampire stories and science fiction. First novel, "Revenants Abroad", available now at Amazon. If you like a vampire you can go out drinking with and still respect yourself in the morning, I think you'd like Andrej.

  1. I got another flash as I was drifting off to sleep last night, and for once decided not to be lazy, and switched the light back on and wrote it down! I wasn’t about to lose two ideas in one day! 🙂

  2. Just as important, you gave yourself a day off, and somebody’s else’s art, in a different medium, helped recharge your engine!

    1. Have you read “You Suck” by Christopher Moore? I myself have not, but I like the idea of a comic vampire novel, and I think it got decent reviews.

      1. I haven’t, but I’ve been eyeballing his books in the bookstores and nearly picked one of them up. I think there’s a whole series of them, and they sounded like a scream 😉

  3. Oh, I hate when that happens with ideas. It’s so frustrating! I’ve been trying to get into the habit of carry a small notebook around with me. I have to remember to put one in my car. One thing I’ve done is put lots of blank post-it notes around the house so that if an idea comes to me I write it on a post-it note right away.

But I totally understand the frustration of coming up with an idea while in a dark movie theater and not having the means to write it down.

I wish I could go see Daybreakers but money is really, really tight right now but I definitely plan to check it out on DVD.

I’m a big Sam Neil fan too. 🙂

    1. I understand about tight budget, believe me. I hit the matinee and skipped the snacks completely so it only set me back $6.50. Still, I can remember seeing movies for $2!! I know you splurged on Avatar, and that’s probably more worthy of being seen on the big screen. Daybreakers will translate well enough to the small screen.

      1. Actually my daughter treated me to the 3-D version of Avatar and bought me snacks so didn’t even have to pay for that thanks to her. 🙂

Yeah, I remember when I’d go to the movies every weekend back in the day. Just so expensive now!

  4. DD – I hate the losing ideas thing. Lately, I always get mine in the shower. I come charging out in my bathrobe, hair still dripping, and go straight to the nearest source of pen & paper. You’d think I’d maybe just put a pen & some note cards in the bathroom, wouldn’t you? Logic. It escapes me.
