Why I Drink

Finally, drinking has a purpose! And you know you need a good excuse to drink, right? (nevermind, don’t answer that)

The other day on Twitter, @EvilWylie posed a question to the twitterverse, to wit:

“What publishing stories made you drink in 2010? Snooki’s book deal? Send me your suggestions, along with your drink of choice!”

Some of the answers have been selected and posted on HuffPo in a slideshow on Andrew Shaffer’s blog for your enjoyment and edification. And my answer is one of ’em! HAHAHA! But go read them all, because misery loves company. There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth, I can hear those molars already.

Author:

Writer of vampire stories and science fiction. First novel, "Revenants Abroad", available now at Amazon. If you like a vampire you can go out drinking with and still respect yourself in the morning, I think you'd like Andrej.

  1. Haha, no, but thanks! I thought that was a very clever one. They’re all credited to the people who submitted them, though. Mine was the one about Sarah Palin’s book, from @DDSyrdal.

    1. Crap…it was right in my face but I did not thought about it. I was looking more for your style of writing and giving information. You should delete both this and your comment and let other guess too. It will be interesting to see who notice DD:) and who was looking for your style of writing.

  2. Yours is probably what I would have picked, but I must admit that I loved the voter (was that for Hilary Duff or Jodi Picoult?) who said “I skipped the drink and ran straight into traffic.”

  3. LOL I loved that one, too. I liked the Snooki/lighter fluid one, too. I’d never even heard of Snooki until a couple weeks ago when someone else was commenting in horror on her book deal.

    1. oh that whole Snooki/Jersey Shore thing is just dreadful. The people are so ignorant, and none of them is even from NJ

  4. They were cast in NYC – I think most of ’em are from the outer boroughs. the only thing Jersey about them is that MTV gave them a house in Seaside to live in for the summer.

  5. Figures. Now those butts help to heap more scorn on Jersey. Is that widely known back there? I doubt it is out here. NJ has so many great aspects and beautiful places I hate to see it endlessly trashed like this.

    1. y’know, for me, The Sopranoes was even worse – it was great acting and all, but nobody in NJ talks like that – all those people sounded and behaved as though they were from Queens or Long Island!

    2. Most people can’t tell the difference. I never saw the show (shocker, I know!) but I’ve heard criticism of another show whose setting was someplace in the Midwest, and people criticized the accents as being inaccurate in that! Wish I could remember what it was. Personally I couldn’t tell Arkansas from Oklahoma from Tennessee, but I’m sure the locals can.

  6. I’m on the fence about reading Freedom. I think it was Evil Wylie who commented somewhere (either his blog or Twitter) that if it had been written by a woman it would be called chick-lit. I guess I should just read it for myself and see what I think. People seem to either love or hate Franzen.

Competition is always good, I don’t like seeing any one company get a monopoly. The consumer always loses in those cases.

  7. I read an excerpt from Freedom in the New Yorker a few months ago, and there’s no denying that he is a terrific writer, but I’m just not sure if I’m up for the subject matter – Updike may have spoiled me for all other tales of suburban ennui, forever.

  8. I was thinking the same thing, the whole thing sounds so depressing. I don’t really think that’s what I need right now. Of course, “Going After Cacciato” isn’t exactly a Disney flick either 😉

  10. I’m just astonished by people who follow thousands! I follow (as of this moment in time) 99 people/publishers/etc. and don’t have time to follow up on half the links they send out. And I know I’ve missed some really good stuff.
