For anyone who’s been wondering, the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp Dark Shadows has been scheduled for release on May 11, 2012. From the Moviefone site:
‘Dark Shadows,’ director Tim Burton’s big-screen adaptation of the ’60s vampire soap opera, will help ‘The Avengers’ kick off the summer movie season next year with a premium May 11, 2012, release.
Just thought I’d let ya know.
I got to keep an eye on this. I love Johnny Depp.

I think I’m even more excited that Johnny Depp’s going to play Nick Charles in a remake of “The Thin Man.” If they cast the right Nora, that could be great fun.

I didn’t know about that! That should be very good, if, as you say, they get the right Nora. The William Powell/Myrna Loy match-up was always a little weird to me, he was so much older than she was. The studios frequently paired 50-ish men with 20-something women in those days, kind of creeps me out. Hopefully Johnny Depp’s Nora will be more of an age with him.

IMDB sez Powell was 13 years older than Loy – I can live w/that. They had such a fun chemistry together, although it was kinda different than the book. In the films, Powell is such an elegant drunk that it’s easy to think he’s a freeloader who married Nora for her money, until you see what a tough guy he is when he needs to be. In the book, he’s undoubtedly a tough guy – an old school hardboiled private eye – and the fun part is realizing that he very smart, very good at managing Nora’s inheritance, and truly, truly devoted to her in a louche kinda way.

I think I was thinking of Irene Hervey as his wife in “Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid.” It’s a similar age spread, 17 years, but he just seemed SO MUCH older. And then he was mid-50s, supposedly falling love with an 18-yr-old Ann Blyth. But, that was the Hollywood machine, pairing young women with middle-aged men.

yeah, and they still do it, all. the. time. Harrison Ford’s co-stars always look like his daughters. At least my man Clint Eastwood, in his last few films, has actually cast the actresses half his age (Hilary Swank, that adorable Hmong girl from “Gran Torino”) as surrogate daughters, not girlfriends/wives.

I even see it in tv commercials! There was an insurance spot that ran with a balding, 40-something man and the girl who I guess was supposed to be his wife looked 13. With a baby. There was no other female in evidence so I assumed she was supposed to be the wife.

I’m really eager to see this, too! If I hear anything else, I’ll post about it.

Can’t wait to see the DS film!
As for the Thin Man remake… I’ll give it a chance but have my reservations. I adore William Powell and Myrna Loy together. They had mad chemistry. đŸ™‚

I know, I’m so looking forward to DS. I just hope they reined in Seth Grahame-Smith and kept it from turning into slapstick.
