I would get this news at the library. Don’t want to break down and cry here. I loved her Dragonriders of Pern series, which I read as a teen. I am so sorry that she never saw the planned tv series come to fruition in her lifetime. An amazing fantasy writer, I think I still have my copies of her books. Her Web site is here. According to Locus Magazine she passed away yesterday:
SFWA Grand Master Anne McCaffrey, 85, died November 21, 2011 of a massive stroke at home in Ireland.
Goodbye, dear lady.
R.I:P. and know how many people have been, and will continue to be, touched by your books,

I’m sorry such a person has passed but look at the legacy she leaves; someone like yourself thought to post a photograph to commemorate and honor all the work she has clearly bequeathed.
I appreciate the tender tribute.

These were, and are, extraordinary books, penned by an extraordinary woman. At a time when there were few women writing ‘genre’ fiction, she gained a devoted following. They were not my first foray into fantasy/sci-fi, that honor goes to Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea Trilogy, but their impact is undeniable.
Had Ms. McCaffrey lived to 120, I’m sure we still would have been shocked and saddened at her passing.

Twilight and Avatar shamelessly stole the idea of ‘imprinting’ from her books, although I’m sure Ms. Meyer and James Cameron would deny ever having heard of McCaffrey. In the Pern series, the dragon riders ‘imprint’ on newly hatched dragons. That was another complaint I had about Avatar.
